Foundational influence

Bruce Barone identifies Jason P. Lowery's work as a major influence on his interest in Bitcoin and directs that its power-projection concept become a foundational Smart Urbanism lens.

Lowery's proposition

Lowery proposes that proof-of-work systems such as Bitcoin can be analyzed as electro-cyber power-projection technology: systems that impose verifiable physical costs through electricity and computation to help secure information in cyberspace.

Smart Urbanism tests whether moving some savings demand from land and other physical assets into digitally scarce proof-of-work assets could reduce the speculative and defensive burden imposed on cities.

Bitcoin uses hash-based proof of work to order transactions and make alteration of the record require redoing the accumulated work. The Bitcoin protocol establishes how proof of work secures its transaction history. It does not establish any claimed urban, land-price, energy-market or public-policy outcome.

Bitcoin does not erase the physical city. The framework asks which layer performs each function, what it costs, and whether the result is independently verifiable.
